ENGLISH LEARNING: Why starting with nouns is important...
Noun words are names for people, places or things. The names for things are the building blocks of any language and therefore starting with nouns when learning English will give you useful building-blocks to be able to at least express basic necessities.
These words can, alone, speak of a person, creature, place, thing or thought. This is helpful when you are not sure how to link words together in a new language yet. It also helps others to try and understand what it is that you are trying to say, receive or express.
There are different ways to recognise nouns and to tune your ears to recognising nouns. A noun literally refers to what you call or name a thing, place or person. For example, "I am Jessie." "Jessie" would be the name of the person and that is why it's a noun. Another example, "That is my dog, Spot." "Spot" and "dog" are nouns because "dog" tells you what thing we are talking about and "Spot" is what we call this specific dog as a name. This is the basic difference between a name (noun) for a group of things "dog" and a name (noun) for a specific thing "Spot" the dog.
Then we also have names for things which are not alive. This will refer to things we can touch, feel, and see. For example, "I went to my hotel." Here the word "hotel" will tell me about a temporary place to stay. So in stead of saying 'I went to my temporary place to stay.' we have a word "hotel" as the name of the place. Another example is also, "I went to my hotel and had lunch at the restaurant table." Here 'hotel', 'restaurant', and 'table' would be nouns. So if I'm stuck in an English speaking country and say "restaurant table" most people would be able to understand that I want to eat or drink something and sit down while doing so.
This is why we at MEND Education suggest that nouns are used as the building-blocks to learning and studying English. This will help your ears and eyes to pick up familiar words as you continue your English learning journey.
On YouTube we have a playlist series on the most common and basic English Nouns used.
